Happy Labor Day!
I met with the guy at Placement Opportunities in Madison on Friday. That went well. He says he has a 100% success rate at placing folks in jobs they like, and he’s been at it for 20 years. So it sort of looks like I’ll wind up in Madison. Heather is happy.
I was thinkin that if I relocate it would be to someplace nearby, like Cross Plains, Ridgeway, Barneveld, Mt. Horeb, or something still in the country, but lots closer than I am here in Platteville. Right now, it’s an 80+ mile drive one way. I’d like to get that closer to 20 or 25 miles or even less. I’m feeling purpose-less and sort of bored already… I want to work. I hope something happens soon.
I talked to my mom the other day and she says Neil and Jane aren’t going back to NOLA. There’s a group of relatives that are going back with Neil (maybe Jane?) to find the horses and get whatever they can out of the house. 4 or 5 others, I do believe. Being unemployed, I’d like to go too but would probably just get in the way. Better that I stay here, even though I want to help.
GB was in the hospital for awhile this past weekend. Seems he had a bad reaction to some meds he was on. I know he had Greg very worried, and I again felt helpless sitting out here in the midwest… But I know I’m doing the right thing by staying here, even though I’m not over there to assist in dealing with any crisis. They’re all capable people out there, so I should just stop worrying. GB came out of it pretty good though, and is home from the hospital, up and about and sorting through things he dropped when he became ill. Good sign. I spoke with him yesterday. He sounded like the same old GB I knew, not the one Greg described to me the other day. Thank goodness.
Heather and I took a drive out to Dubuque yesterday. I’m in search of a new pair of shoes, because the ones I have no longer look decent enough to wear to interviews. I’ll have to bug Jules about that. He said DVR would cover that cost. Thankfully. We wandered the mall, and looked at every possible store but came up basically empty-handed. I found a pair at Penny’s that will do, but not what I wanted, exactly… Two years ago I got a really great pair from the shoe store downtown. They’re SAS shoes, and fit my AFO’s perfectly and are very comfortable. I can’t find any now, and that shoe store closed up a few months ago. I searched the internet for SAS shoes, and can’t find any. Imagine that!
While in Dubuque, I decided I’d top off my gas tank. Was a pleasant surprise to pay only 2.99 a gallon for gas. Here it’s up to 3.24 a gallon. Sad tho, to think I’m getting a good deal at 2.99 a gallon. Soon gas will be such a big part of my budget that I’ll just have to stay home all the time. *sigh*
Both kids seem to be enjoying college. Brian rides in a carpool with 3 other buddies. They all take turns driving to school. He got his steel-toed boots and I found a Starrett vernier caliper on eBay for a very good price. Next we’ll work on the set of micrometers. Heather is happy to be busy and is also liking her classes. She really misses music, though, and is applying to the university in Madison to see if they’ll give her an audition. She says that MATC has a community orchestra and she’ll look into joining that. She needs music, it’s good for her and makes her feel centered again.
I think I’ll spend this Labor Day laboring around the house here, and get things cleaned up. Next weekend is Dairy Days and there will be a parade and carnival and stuff… Heather is spending a couple nights here so she can hang out with friends and have fun at the fair. It’s also the annual historic encampment weekend, so maybe I’ll go down and take pictures again.
